Installing Unreal Engine

Before we start building worlds and and make turn our imagination to reality, we gotta install the tool.

Well, if you're using Windows, Mac, or Linux, this section will walk you through getting Unreal Engine up and running — with clarity, minimal fluff, and no confusing detours.

How to:

  1. Go to the Official Unreal Engine Website (Avoid suspicious sources🔺)

First, download the Epic Games Launcher — it’s your main hub for everything Unreal and Epic Games. From here, you’ll access the Unreal Engine, manage your downloaded assets, browse games, and more.”

Sign in to your Epic account to start downloading the engine.

1) Type in your email and password, then hit ‘Sign In’

2)Pick a supported social or gaming platform to log in.

Installing Unreal

1) In the Epic Games Launcher, click ‘Unreal Engine’ on the left. This will show all Unreal-related tabs.

2) Click the Library tab, that’s where you’ll install and manage Unreal Engine versions.

3) Click the Add (+) button next to Engine Versions to add a new engine. That little tile shows which version you’re about to install.

4) By default, the engine tile shows the latest Unreal Engine version. If you want an older version, just click the dropdown and pick the one you need from the list.

5) On the engine tile, click Install. A pop-up will appear with a few things to review:

  1. Check out the Unreal Engine Pricing options. Click Accept when you're ready.

  2. Read the End User License Agreement. Tick the checkbox to confirm you've read and agree. Then, click Accept to continue.

6) To pick where Unreal Engine gets installed, click Browse in the install location window. By default, it’ll use your OS’s standard folder.

7) Click Options to choose which Unreal Engine components you want to install. This opens the Installation Options dialog.

8) Pick the components you need for your project. Check the table below for what each one does.

Target Platform

Source code to develop for platforms like Android, iOS, Linux, TVOS (requires extra SDKs).

Before installing Unreal Engine, check that your drive has enough space. The Installation Options dialog will show how much storage you need based on your chosen components.

After picking your components, click Apply to confirm your choices.

8) In the install location dialog, click Install to start the process.

ℹ Depending on your OS settings, you may need to approve security prompts before the installation begins.

  • To pause an installation, click the Pause installation icon on the engine tile.

  • To cancel an installation, click the Cancel installation (X) icon.

  • To resume a paused installation, click the Resume installation icon.

9) Once installation finishes, start Unreal Engine by clicking Launch on the engine tile—or use the quick launch button at the top-right of the Epic Games Launcher.
